Maureen remained the sort of woman every family prays it gets lucky enough to keep. Dominic won things in court with frightening elegance and pretended not to enjoy it as much as he did. As for Preston, he drifted downward the way men without inner structure always do when money alone can no longer scaffold their image. Younger women. New scandals. Reputational erosion. He was not destroyed in one grand, cinematic burst. That would have been too merciful. Instead he became smaller year by year, less relevant, more pathetic, until even his name lost most of its voltage.

One evening, much later, when Eleanor was old enough to ask dangerous questions with a child’s brutal innocence, she stood in the gallery in front of the yellow onesie painting and said, “Mama, is this the day Daddy went away?”

Sloan knelt beside her.

“Were you sad?”

“Yes.”

“Were you scared?”

“Very.”

Eleanor looked up at her. “But you stayed.”

Sloan smiled then, tears threatening in the way they still did when motherhood showed her herself through her daughter’s eyes.

“Yes,” she said. “I stayed.”

Eleanor considered the painting for another long second, then took her mother’s hand. “Good,” she said simply. “Because otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”

That was the final twist after all.
