The stage was set to present the Best Male Video Award, but what started as a triumphant return quickly turned into a disastrous train wreck. Roth couldn’t help but go off script, relishing the limelight while a visibly irritated Eddie Van Halen had to intervene, forcibly pulling Roth away from the microphone. The drama didn’t end there; backstage, tempers flared with Roth and Eddie nearly coming to blows over Roth’s onstage antics. Many found the incident embarrassing and disrespectful, especially as Beck tried to give his acceptance speech. Eddie later said it was more humiliating backstage, where Roth essentially spat in his face.
Their reunion plans completely fell apart, leaving Van Halen at a crossroads. Searching for another new lead singer led them to Gary Cherone, but Van Halen’s first release with their new frontman, Van Halen III, performed poorly in sales. Under mounting pressure from their label, the band decided to part ways with Cherone in 1999. As fans wondered about the band’s future, Eddie faced a new battle, ignoring urgent hip replacement surgery which took a toll on his health. He finally underwent the needed surgery in 1999 and sought solace in his personal life, enjoying precious moments with his wife Valerie and son Wolfgang.
Just when life seemed to take a positive turn, Eddie faced a devastating setback during a routine dental checkup. His dentist discovered abnormal scar tissue, prompting an urgent follow-up. Subsequent biopsies revealed the heartbreaking news: Eddie had tongue cancer. Following the diagnosis, Eddie discreetly embarked on chemotherapy treatments in Houston, Texas, and explored alternative medicine. Ultimately, he had a significant portion of his tongue removed as he valiantly fought his cancer.
Eddie withdrew entirely from the public eye, yet just two years after his initial diagnosis, he proudly announced his triumph over cancer. However, the battle was far from over. His doctors warned him that if he continued smoking, his cancer would inevitably return. Sadly, Eddie chose to brush aside his doctor’s advice, casting a shadow of uncertainty and concern over his future. In the spring of 2002, Eddie and Valerie announced their separation, with their divorce finalized five years later.
Eddie’s life was on a downward spiral, not only in his personal life but also in his music career. At this time, Van Halen had no record deal and no lead singer, and the situation seemed dire. A visit from ex-bandmate Sammy Hagar in 2003 revealed the true extent of Eddie’s struggles. Arriving at Eddie’s house, Hagar was horrified by what he saw: Eddie was in a terrible state, living in what Hagar described as a “bum shack.” Deep in his depression, Eddie turned to drugs and alcohol, with his deteriorating teeth becoming visible signs of his self-destruction.
To pull Eddie out of this spiral, Van Halen reformed and reunited with Sammy Hagar. However, bassist Michael Anthony was not invited to join the reformed band, leading to a standoff as Hagar refused to continue without Anthony. Michael Anthony had to make significant sacrifices, taking a sizable pay cut and signing away all rights to the band name and logo just to be part of the tour. The four musicians hit the road in 2004, hoping it would revitalize Eddie. Instead, Eddie’s shocking unhealthy appearance and drunken behavior on stage left fans disappointed, as he no longer performed like the rock god he once was.
It was strange to see that happen, but Ed was sick—no one realized how sick he really was until he could no longer do his job. That’s when Hagar stepped in, saying, “Hey, this is fed up, man. You played like shit, and it’s embarrassing to try to sing when you’re so out of tune.” That’s what was happening on the reunion tour, and that’s when things came to a head. By the end of the tour, it was clear Eddie was going through one of the absolute lowest points of his life, but rock bottom was still to come.
Following the ill-fated 2004 tour, Hagar left Van Halen again, and the band gradually faded from the spotlight. Yet, in a surprising turn of events, 2007 witnessed Van Halen’s comeback, with David Lee Roth reclaiming his place as the band’s frontman and Eddie’s son Wolfgang taking up the bass guitar in place of Michael Anthony. The reunited band was ready for a fresh start. However, Eddie’s personal demons loomed, threatening to derail his return.
An unfortunate incident where Eddie was visibly drunk on stage led to a heated showdown between Wolfgang and his inebriated father, causing a major turning point in Eddie’s tumultuous journey to sobriety. Throughout Eddie’s lifetime, numerous attempts to curb his alcohol and drug addiction had failed, until Wolfgang’s unyielding insistence finally struck a chord. Inspired by his son, Eddie embarked upon a transformative path towards recovery. “I got sober during that first tour, and I was so nervous,” Eddie said. “Every time I looked at my son, I thought, ‘If my 16-year-old son can be kicking ass like that, I better suck it up here.’ He gave me the strength to do that.”
Eddie’s personal life took an upturn as well. He crossed paths with Janie Liszewski, whom he married in 2009. To celebrate their union, Eddie raised a glass of non-alcoholic cider, marking a significant milestone in his transformation. The guitarist bid farewell to his smoking habit and, in 2015, embarked on a tour while maintaining his sobriety for the first time ever. But then, Eddie’s health took a dramatic nosedive.
2017 marked the beginning of a relentless decline. At the end of that year, Eddie was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, and doctors told him he had six weeks to live. He went to Germany for a gamma knife radiation procedure, which initially helped. However, in March 2020, a global crisis sent shockwaves across the world, ushering in a widespread lockdown. This dealt a severe blow to Eddie, as Germany’s strictly closed borders sealed off his access to life-prolonging treatment.
For the following months, the immunocompromised musician withdrew from public view, opting for self-isolation as his health slowly deteriorated. Months later, Eddie was hospitalized for pneumonia, followed by a debilitating stroke which left him unable to speak and reliant on oxygen. The situation worsened when he experienced another massive stroke the following month, prompting his brother Alex to urgently summon the rest of the family to the hospital. On the morning of October 6th, 2020, Eddie’s breathing gradually slowed as he lay on his deathbed surrounded by his closest family members—Wolfgang, Janie, Alex, and even his ex-wife Valerie.
Summoning the last ounce of energy, Eddie mustered the strength to say, “I love you,” to those gathered in the room before taking his final breath at 10:14 a.m. The music world was stunned by the breaking news: legendary musician and co-founder of Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, had died. Fans and fellow musicians alike were heartbroken. Eddie wasn’t just a guitar god to millions; he was a gentle soul, an innovator, and a unique spirit. There’s now a huge void in rock and roll—he forever changed guitar playing and was a major contributor to the genre.
Eddie’s death certificate attributed his passing to a stroke resulting from his body being ravaged by cancer. However, Eddie had his own unique theories about the origins of his illness. In a 2006 interview on the Howard Stern Show, the guitarist made several peculiar claims that captured everyone’s attention. Eddie believed his cancer wasn’t caused by smoking, but by the metal pick he often held in his mouth while playing. He reasoned that the studio equipment’s electromagnetic field conducted through the pick and onto his tongue, and since the disease hadn’t spread to his lungs, smoking couldn’t have been the cause.
Forensic pathologists deemed it unlikely that this directly caused Eddie’s fatal tongue cancer, but his conviction in this belief played a role at the time. Unaware of the grave mistake, he continued to smoke. In the wake of Eddie’s passing, speculation surrounding a potential Van Halen tribute show quickly spread. Rumors gained momentum until Wolfgang stepped in to address them, clarifying that although a tribute show had been planned, it was ultimately scrapped due to disagreements among the surviving members.
By August 2023, Wolfgang officially declared that Van Halen was finished. Nevertheless, the band’s remarkable legacy lives on. Van Halen’s most profound impact lies in the hearts of countless young fans whom Eddie inspired to take up the guitar. Many of those fans have since left their own indelible mark on the music industry, ensuring that the genius of Eddie Van Halen will forever be remembered.
